Is Sunfiber® a prebiotic?

Sunfiber® is a prebiotic fiber that is unique in comparison to other dietary fibers. A prebiotic fiber is one that produces "short chain fatty acids" (SCFA) in the gut via a fermentation process. The rate of production of SCFAs is very important. If fermentation occurs rapidly (as is the case with inulin and other soluble fibers) the result is excess bloating and flatulence. The fermentation process of Sunfiber® is steady resulting in a higher total amount of SCFAs that are produced over a greater period of time, leading to significantly less gas, bloating and discomfort.

What are short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs)?

SCFAs are small compounds produced by fermentation of dietary fiber by gut bacteria. The three primary SCFAs are acetate, propionate, and butyrate. Butyrate fuels the cells of the colon and supports intestinal health.*

Guar gum is a viscous, water-soluble carbohydrate from the guar seed, used in foods as a thickener and stabilizer. Sunfiber®is a non-viscous form called partially hydrolyzed guar gum (PHGG). What are FODMAPs?

FODMAPs (fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols) are poorly absorbed sugars that may trigger digestive discomfort in those with IBS or other functional GI disorders. Sunfiber GI is tasteless and mixes easily into many foods and beverages. The true regulating benefits of Sunfiber GI, which are delivered from the prebiotic soluble fiber, are very heat stable and can be added to most any food or beverage, including coffee. The temperature of hot foods and liquids, however, can decrease the active probiotics within Sunfiber GI, and thus it is typically recommended to add Sunfiber GI to foods and beverages that are lukewarm or cooler (such as water, smoothies, juices, cereal, yogurt, etc.).
