Prepare for Cold & Flu Season: What Studies Show About Gut and Immune Health

Cold and flu season is approaching, and keeping your defenses strong is top of mind. What many don’t realize is just how much your gut health influences your body’s immune response.

Studies suggest that maintaining a balanced gut microbiome can support immune resilience, potentially reducing the frequency and severity of cold symptoms. A clinical trial published in the European Review for Medical and Pharmacological Sciences explored this connection, examining how Sunfiber® (partially hydrolyzed guar gum or PHGG) may impact immune health and ease common cold symptoms.

Why Gut Health Matters for Immunity

We’ve all had those days when a runny nose, low energy, or digestive upset throws off our routine. Research continues to confirm that gut health plays a key role in how the body responds to these challenges.

The gut microbiome produces beneficial compounds, such as short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which help regulate immune function. Since nearly 70% of the immune system resides in the gut, supporting digestive balance is one of the smartest ways to prepare for seasonal challenges.

In a placebo-controlled, double-blind, randomized study from Japan, researchers followed 96 healthy adults over 12 weeks. Participants consumed either 5.2 grams of Sunfiber daily or a placebo, with outcomes measured by:

  • Cold-like symptoms, recorded in participant diaries

  • SCFA levels in stool samples

  • Immune markers in blood

The findings underscored how digestive health and immune resilience are closely linked.

What Researchers Found

More Symptom-Free Days
Adults taking Sunfiber reported significantly more days without cold symptoms compared to the placebo group.

Reduction in Cold Symptoms
Sunfiber use was associated with fewer and less severe common cold symptoms, including:

  • Runny nose and nasal congestion

  • General fatigue and chills

  • Joint discomfort

Participants also experienced fewer days with digestive issues like constipation or diarrhea, further reinforcing the gut–immune connection.

Increased Levels of SCFAs
The study also showed steady increases in SCFAs, particularly butyric acid, a postbiotic known to support both gut and immune health.

“Since 70% of the immune system resides in the gut, these findings are especially meaningful,” explains Derek Timm, PhD, RDN, Tomorrow’s Nutrition functional ingredient expert.

While not every immune marker reached statistical significance, researchers noted a strong association between improved gut function, reduced cold symptoms, and overall immune support.
